| From Good to bad |

DH is not too much into V Day hoopla, but since this year was the first time we were actualy together on Feb 14th after 2001 when we were clumsy college-goers with money enough only to buy a cards to each other, that we exchanged stealthily between classes, DH bought two gifts for me this time both to be openned on the day, and not a day before. So.
Feb 14th
5:30AM : I snoozed the alarm and decided to sleep for some more time, when my brain woke up to tell me, it was V Day and I could finally open the gifts DH has. I jumped out and of course shook DH hard who had slept pretty late the previous night and does not like waking up before 7 on Saturdays. He had one big gift from Macy's and one tiny gift in a reused box. And he said the little gift was the important gift. So I openned the little gift first. It was.. much to my surprise a box of Altoids! I was confused, and DH was half asleep. To give you a background, I was the Table Topics Master in Toastmasters the previous week and it being Valentine week, chose a topic related to the day. This was my topic, 'Valentine's Day is around the corner, but times are tough, economy is bad, and not many are inclined to buy expensive gifts to their Valentine. So I have a list of inexpensive items to give as gifts. And volunteers should come and tell us why they think the cheap gift is perfect for their Valentine.' And I had the following options - Stapler, BreathMints, Measuring Tape, Tissue Paper, A can of Coke. I can say it was fun to hear people talk. I concluded the session requesting everyone to Please not give such gifts to their Valentine. ;--) And here was DH giving me Altoids! In a sleepy voice, DH went," You are as refreshing as a breath mint.. and when I am with you I feel refreshed..." DH apparently had a 1 minute speech prepared, but was too sleepy to deliver it ;--) I grabbed the other bigger gift, and openned it as fast as my sleepy self would allow me to. It was a cute Red coat! DH knew I would not buy a red coat by myself. Then he added sleepily that there wass something else for me in the house, and I had to find it. I looked all over, gave up and ask DH for a clue. And he said to look on the floor as I searched. I am sure I was a funny sight as I walked from room to room scanning the floor. Finally, it was in the corner of one of the bedrooms, a rose flower pot, with a cute card.
9:00AM : We were on the road towards SF. I was wearing my new Red Coat. Inspite of knowing that it was predicted to rain.
11:30AM : We parked our car in Fisherman's Wharf and rented bikes and helmets, and got the trail map to bike to Golden Gate. We just about started pedalling, when it started drizzling. We waited under cover of a building for a few minutes. I wanted to wear my rain jacket, but DH didnt allow me to take off my coat! So I looked like a bunny rabbit, fat at that, wearing a coat, which btw was a size too big for me, and on top it wearing a rain jacket.
1:00PM : It was drizzling intermittently. We had biked a few steep slopes across SF Bay, crossed beautiful parks, and were on the bridge itself. It was nice weather. I was able to see top of the bridge which even in summer is most days hidden in the clouds.
2:00PM : We had lunch at a park, parking our bikes. Puliodharai and appalam. Yumm it was. We head back the same way we came.
3:30PM : We stopped at Ghirardelli. V-day and biking were two fine excuses to treat ourselves to yummy icecream and hot chocolate.
4:45PM : We take our car and began driving towards our hotel in Union Square, which was supposed to be 5mins according to GPS.
6:15PM : We finally parked our car at a Public Parking Lot. It took us almost an hour to make the 5min drive, and having spent some more time to find some parking, we were only too happy and too tired to get out of the car and head to our room.
7:00PM : We dressed up in better clothes, after downing some complimentary nuts. We went to the Conceirge and asked him to set up reservations to a nearby Italian place. We were enlightened to the fact that Feb14th was the second busiest night of the year, after New Years Eve. He gave us an option back in the Wharf, a four course dinner for$75each. I was dieting, and there was no point spending so much.
7:30PM : We walked into Bloomingdale's Mall, and put our names down in a couple of restaurants. Straits lounge had a full menu, and by now we were straving to have something to eat.
8:00PM : Finally a group left and me and DH were just about to take the table. When.. lo behold, the two Indian girls who were also waiting for a table, and had come after us, came and stood there by the same table! Why is it that we Indians forget all the manners of waiting in a queue and not breaking lines, immediately when we see fellow indians? At the same time, another table was getting ready, so I told DH we can take that table, and leave these girls with this one. Although it didnt matter, I just cannot really stand people who break lines. Would they have done it if it had been an American couple before them? Doesnt their conscience prick them at all? My pressure is building even now as I think of them.
8:30PM : We decided there was no point letting two ill-mannered females spoil our dinner mood. Oh by the way I had super fun watching couples flirting while we were waiting for a table. The place had indian options too, we had samosas and spicy noodles. I had to be clumsy while eating and spill some food on myself, thankfully the napkil caught most of it and my white top and cream pant were saved.
9:00PM : Back in room, and we called it a night.
What was bad you ask? There is more to come.
Feb15th 9:00AM : It was a cloudy rainy day and our plans to hike in Muir Woods when down with the weather. We decided to do some indoor activity for the day and were to return back home in the evening. We went to the Parking Lot, and I was the first to notice that our window was rolled down. DH immediately checked the glove compartment to find that our GPS had been stolen. :--( Since the window was not broken, I think the previous night DH in all the frenzy and tiredness, and impatience to shed responsibility of the car, forgot to roll up the windows before leaving the car. The thief had full access to the car. But thankfully stuff in our trunk was not stolen. Our tennis racquets, 20lb bag of whole wheat, tire chains, my music, everything was there. Except the GPS and its cable, and my box of Altoids!!
10:00AM : I was still a little shook up from the incident, we used the iPhone to take us back home, driving in SF downtown without a GPS can be a nightmare. We drove straight back home, because I was worried the thief might have gotten our home address from the GPS and might have gone home to rob some more.
1:30PM : We reached home, locks were intact, our TV, which is for now the most expensive thing in our home was still there. ;--)
The rest of the weekend was a blur of watching TV, cooking, eating, gymming and getting some real and useful work done.
Whew! I have been wanting to write this all week, but it has been crazy busy. This year sure is proving to be a happening year. What with my car being rear ended on the first day to work in this year, and my fainting episode, and my ear block episode (..oh didnt I talk about that? Swimming on Saturday caused my ear to get totally blocked in the night, which led me to yell at DH for taking me swimming in the first place. 10PM that night saw us driving to the urgent care, the doctor put some solution to take the stuff out, and my hearing was all good as new) .. and now GPS episode.. and its only mid February! |
