| New year, resolutions and such |
| Monday, January 04, 2010 |
Everyone thinks New Year resolutions dont work. So much so I have stopped telling anyone that I make resolutions.
I would like to disagree.
Anything can work, anyone can make resolutions and follow them, if one has the will power to do it, if one really has the motivation and the drive to do it.
So first and foremost, you have to want it really bad, then you will stick to the resolution.
My Dad, since he is retired recently and has more than enough time in his hands in spite of being actively involved in various volunteer activities forwarded this wonderful email.
One day all the employees reached the office and they saw a big advice on the door on which it was written:
“Yesterday the person who has been hindering your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the funeral in the room that has been prepared the gym”.
In the beginning, they all got sad for the death of one of their colleagues, but after a while they started getting curious to know who was hindered the growth of his colleagues and the company itself.
The excitement in the gym was such that security agents were ordered to control the crowd within the room.
The more people reached the coffin, the more excitement heated up.
Everyone thought: “Who is this guy who was hindering my progress ? Well, at least he died !”.
One by one the thrilled employees got closer to the coffin, and when they looked inside it they suddenly became speechless.
They stood nearby the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul.
There was a mirror inside the coffin: everyone who looked inside it could see himself.
There was also a sign next to the mirror that said:
“There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth: It is YOU.
You are the only person who can revolutionize your life.
You are the only person who can influence your happiness, your realization and your success.
You are the only person who can help yourself.
Your life does not change when your boss changes, when your friends change, when your parent change, when your partner changes, when your company changes. Your life changes when YOU change, when you go beyond your limiting beliefs, when you realize that your are they only one responsible for your life.
“The most important relationship you can have, is the one you have with yourself”
Examine yourself, watch yourself. Don’t be afraid of difficulties, impossibilities and losses: be a winner, build yourself and your reality.
The world is like a mirror: It gives back to anyone the reflection of the thoughts in which one has strongly believed.
The world and your reality are like mirrors laying in a coffin, which show to any individual the death of his divine capability to imagine and create his happiness and his success.
It’s the way you face Life that makes the difference Have a nice day !!
(Now you know where I get my characteristic preachy attitude from :--D)
But seriously human beings have unlimited potential in them, why is it difficult to keep some resolutions?
I mean what are your resolutions, that you promise to keep beginning of the year and forget about?
10 most common resolutions for 2010 in this article - http://www.theindiansabroad.com/2009/12/10-most-common-new-year-resolutions-for-2010/
1. Get fit: Many of us like to put this on the top of their list. May be just because it sounds good . 2. Lose Weight: This is another common resolution, obviously not working if it is on the list every year. 3. Break a bad habit: Minimize/quit drinking or smoking or swearing….. Not sure why wait for the New Year to break a habit if it bothers/affects you. 4. Move to another country: India to abroad; or go back to India. We spend lots of our time ‘planning’ to leave home or going back home. 5. Be more organized: Does making a list of resolutions count towards this goal? 6. Spend more time with family and friends: We all should, even without a resolution list. 7. Minimize time on the Internet, especially on Face Book: Enough said! 8. Save more – be less wasteful and more environment friendly: There is a common habit to waste what we have in abundance – time, money, food…Do we really need a resolution for commonsense stuff? 9. Find a job: Lots of people are stressed about the job situation or job security; others haven’t have been as lucky and need a job. 10. Take more chances: Whatever that means. Hiding under the bed worked best for me when I was young. 11. Stop making the resolution list and actually do something!
Accepted I have most of them on my list too.
Rads' post got me thinking on a tangent. Did I keep up my resolutions from 2009? Thinking hard, I can proudly say, some yes, some no. I may have slipped here and there, due to circumstances, situations, but if I did keep those resolutions for atleast 50% of the year that counts as success right? Better late than never, or better 6 months than 0 months?
After all no human is perfect. It is boring to be perfect. So what do we do? We keep trying!!
So I have the same resolutions. Get fit, eat healthy, not waste time, less TV, (dont bring work home - that is sooo busted this year) do more volunteer work, etc etc.
Did I say, being an optimist, being positive was one of my resolutions and I have successfully succeeded in keeping that! :--))
After all the New Year partying, travelling and getting back to routine and feeling a bit bogged down about no more holidays rut, it was only today that I got thinking about what I wanted to accomplish this year. Last year was great, in many aspects, career front and personal front, not so great in some. Some disappointments, slips. I have decided not to beat myself over it.
So I am going to try yet again, with new resolutions, and annoy my few readers to death. ;--D |

I love this post. Very practical. Hardly preachy :)
Also - thanks for the suggestion about organizing my activities into months/dates/time period. Will work on it for sure!
-
beautiful post... and yes, wish you a happy New Year...
-
Neat! :)
A couple of things that we need to keep in mind while doing so would be imho
1. Don't be too hard on yourself. Forgive and cut yourself some slack if you do slip. We are our best friend after all :)
2. Break each resolution into do-able chunks? You software folks have it in your blood :P
Like for ex: Mine is not just to lose weight, but lose fat percentage, drop LDL points, drop 3 inches off my waist.. stuff like that?

Happy new year to you too, SK :-) I will check with you sometime middle of the year to see how you are doing with your resolutions ;-)
-
Happy New Year! Nice list, and all the best in the new year.

Kid, I did look at Zeole, are you the marketing guy for them :--)
Nandini, Good luck to us!!! :--)
Sree, Happy new year to you!
Rads, Its not Software folks, its Engineering folks. :--) I meant, to lose weight, if you plan to lose 20 lbs in 2010, translate it to how many pounds per months, then per week, so we can see if it is trending towards or away from the deadline. ;--) Basically have frequent checkpoints.
Dushti, Pliss do! :--))
Saumya, Thankoo.! :--)
