Weekend Matters, this and that
Monday, August 14, 2006
I had a wonderful weekend after a long time. I was edging in my seat waiting for the clock to show 5:30 before getting the hell out of work. This one friend was going on a business trip to a place where one would only go on a vacation - Costa Rica. After feeling all jealous, and talking about how we would so cherish the time he would not be here, thus whiling away some more time before 5:30, I promptly disappeared.

I came home and waited for DH (new name, here after, stands for Dear Husband) to come home, so we can have some fun. By the time he came home it was about 7PM, and I was half asleep on the couch watching Friends. I lay my head on DH's lap as if deep in thoughts, and here is how the conversation goes.

" What do you want to do now?" DH asks.
I pout my lips, to say, I dont know.
"Bowling?"
Pouted lips.
"Tennis?"
Pouted lips.
"Lets go swimming."
Pouted lips.
"Lets take out bicycles out and go for a ride, its been a long time since we did that."
I give my disapproval with a 'tch' and a slight dismissal of the idea with my hand.

Finally DH drags me out of the apartment and into the car, without any clue as to what we will be doing, or where we will be going. I wasnt sure what I wanted to do. Its surprising how too many choices can confuse you.

"Lets go to the temple, we have been meaning to go for so long. I can do with some peace in my head and my life"

We drove to the nearby temple and spent some time in prayers, watched young kids, ate nice kovil prasadham and returned. Its amazing how man forgets to see the big picture and gets confused and worries about the small small things in life. Today I worry about this work, that work, loans, family, etc etc, but ultimately what matters, we dont realize. Only spending some time before God would do the magic. I was definitely feeling better.

We did our grocery shopping too, which we usually do on Sunday. I had already gotten my car washed in the afternoon. So we had in total got a lot of work done on Friday alone. We went to Blockbuster to get a movie. DH is a lot into all the Rewards and Free movie coupons and stuff, we had a free movie coupon that day. Again I was very selective about what I wanted to watch. No mood for Romance, no sappy tales, nothing heavy, nothing that would stay in your mind for even a second after the movie was over. We settled on Pacifier. A kids' movie, where evil loses, and good wins.

Saturday DH goes to play soccer with friends here. But because this weekend I had decided to not work, I forced him to stay at home, with me. Decided to make murungakkai sambhar. We had gotten frozen drumsticks the previous week, and DH loves them. Only after I let the drumsticks and potatoes boil, did I realize I did not have various things to make the sambhar. I did not have tamarind, or coriander seeds. The daal was getting cooked in the cooker. So I had to hurry DH to go to the Indian Store with a tiny list of things to buy. I was almost worried that the potatoes and drumstick would become too well cooked before DH came with the necessary things, but thankfully, things did not go too much out of control. After a hearty meal, when had a blissful sleep for an hour, and then decided to go and play some Tennis. We were playing after quite a few weekends, since the heat wave swept California. But surprisingly we were not so bad.

Evening we went to the Indian grocery store again to get Idli mix. Everytime we end up wasting the Coriander leaves because we get a big bunch and never use all of them in one cooking. This time I decided to make coriander chutney. And to go with the Chutney, I decided to make idli.

First we thought we will keep two plates of four idlis each for the two of us. Then I said that if we make some more we can have that for breakfast the next day. So DH kept 4 plates of 16 idlis while I made the chutney. The chutney came out awesome. In fact it was so awesome that both of us ate the idlis like there was no tomorrow, and hence there was no need to keep the idlis for tomorrow! Yep, can you believe it, we finished all 16 idlis between us! Now that is what I call a good dinner. Its amazing how the idli, chutney, drumstick sambhar that Mom made almost every other day for breakfast, which made your face contort, with an expressions which asked," Innikkum adhe Idli sambhar-a?", was now the best dinner ever had.

We were really happy that we had gotten most of our tasks on the weekend to-do list already completed. Sunday started off with going to the church and then going to Walmart to buy some stuff. We hit upon this brilliant idea of buying the 'build-it-yourself' chest of drawers. We were not amateurs per se to these kind of projects. I had built one myself with the help of another friend a couple of years back, and DH and I had recently built our cute book shelf not too long ago.

So DH started the project at 4:15PM as usual after our cosy afternoon nap. The project seemed to take forever. I had by that time, gotten some work done, yes, I openned my laptop only Sunday evening, and done some cleaning, some cooking and made phone calls to India too! After doing all this I helped DH with the project, tightening some screws and hitting some nails. It was then DH noticed that I was ambidextrous. I could use both my hands to work the screw driver. I want to writet about my ambi-dexterity, if thats even a word, but that would be a different post.

Poor DH got blisters on his hands because of an inappropriate sized screw driver which he had to use. I felt so sorry for him. But he looked so cute. I guess the vulnerability brings in a cute look to anyone. So I put band-aid for his hand. I also had to pesanjufy his food for him so he could eat with a spoon, as it was his right palm that he had hurt. It was a romantic end to a productice weekend. There isnt a lump in the throat like a year back on Sunday nights, but still the sadness prevails. From me pestering him asking him when he would be moving to the Bay Area, now it is him pestering me to ask me to move to the Bay Area, so we can live under one roof. Only consolation this weekend was that DH is coming back home in two days.
