Going to school
Tuesday, March 31, 2009
It was a busy morning, 8AM, I was driving out of the local high school, where I tutored on Tuesday mornings. As I waited at the busy intersection, to make my left turn, I was filled with nostalgia, just like the previous few weeks, about my own school days. I watched the high schoolers amble along with stylish bags and paraphernalia adorning them. I watched car after car coming in, parents dropping kids on their way to work.

When was the last time I was dropped off at school by my parents? A few times in junior college for early morning classes, but otherwise, only in Kinder Garten!

I did my KG in Pondicherry. Me, Mom and Dad used to leave to work/school together. I dont know if I remember or of my Mom told me, but apparently I used to always forget my hanky and always remember to cry about it when I neared the bakery shop. My Dad always got me a cookie from the shop to make me stop crying. From then on I have never stopped my pretentiousness I guess.

Then in elementary school, one Anna, Dad's subordinate took the arduous task of driving me to school, everyday on his bicycle. I remember then too, while returning I will always ask for water when we near local roadside shops, and the Anna was kind enough to buy me a butter biscuit along with the water. ;--)

I tried the Pallavan bus too at the tender age of 10. Rode in the Ladies special. I still remember my first bus ride, I almost had tears in my eyes, as my Mom told the conductor to drop me off at CLRI. I got my first watch at around that time too.

Later I went in a school van, which serviced a Boys School. I used to be the only girl in the van. I never had friends, since the boys were much older than me.

Then Std 6 in Bombay, brother started 1std, and my Mom worked right opposite our school. So I would pick my brother after school and go to Mom's office hang out in the break room, until Mom was ready to leave, and take the BEST bus back home. Dad worked far away, and used to take the train back home late in the night.

Later during the same year we had a school bus route which made life easier, we rode on the school bus with friends, that was fun.

Std 7, we were back in Chennai. Me and a friend used to walk to school, it was walkable distance. I remember cursing under my breath everyday as I stood in my friends house from 8:20 to 8:40, my friend was always late. Most days her Dad would offer to drop us in school, because it was too late to walk and reach on time.

Then Std 9, I took my cycle to school. I cannot remember how my brother used to come to school. He is totally phased out from my memories ;--P

Junior College I can never forget. Bus stop at 6:50AM. Catch the once-in-30mins 18M to school. Get back in a terribly crowded bus, after all the different tuition classes. I was heavily armed with a huge water bottle and a huge hotpack on either sides and a huge bag to protect my back from the umpteen you-know-whos in the bus.
Once in a while on weekends, when there is not much traffic on the road on early mornings, my Dad would drop me at school on his scooter.
Sometimes, a friends dad would pick her up and since I lived on the way would drop me home too. That was probably the first time ever I rode in a car. I used always get tensed when it was time for me to get off, because I wouldnt know how to open the car door, and believe me it was a big deal for me at that time!

In college I took the train. 7:40AM. One of my friends used to come that early too, and when I saw him, I would get in the General Compartment, else the last Ladies Compartment. Evenings, a bunch of us day scholar girls would ride together in the train, 'foot boarding' - aka travelling holding onto the middle rod facing inside, body being more outside. Rarely in final year I took my Scooty to college. I was scared to drive on GST Road, what with all the accidents.

So I think I have covered almost all forms of transportion, during my schooling. :--)

As I saw these kids being driven to school, dropped off right at the entrance, I couldnt help but think how pampered this generation is. :--P
