Lost - DH and I have been catching up with Lost Season 5 the past few weeks. I liked the episodes mainly for the amazing backgrounds and cinematography. And yes, I guess for the gripping storyline as well. But Season 5 really takes the cake for the gripping storyline.
Time travel. Time travel is a confusing concept to me, and watching it in Lost just makes me head ache. To give a very very brief background, this island on which this plane crashes, has unique capabilities, it can move its people in time! There was one episode where people just move from 1954 to 1977 to 2007 and many other years within one episode. And stuff happens. The high point is when Mr Locke who is in the present, sees some incidents happen, and when he goes to the past, does things to make those incidents happen! Thus completing the whole circle of events. Thus confusing the heck out of me. Well, its true, even if time travel is possible, one cannot change the future by going back and changing the past. Lets not talk about Butterfly Effect, or the even more mind boggling Heroes. Time travel is kind of a cute concept, no, I didnt go ahead and try to google for details on it. Its like the parallel Universe concept, now I am not sure if I got that from one of Crichton's book on time travel, forget the name. Anyhoo, quite the time pass, this Season. So essentially, these people who go back to the past from the present (I refuse to call the future, since this is viewer's initial point of reference) actually while trying to stop bad stuff from happening which caused the present to be as it is, actually end up making the stuff happen that caused the present to be as it is!! Wah wah! AS they say, whatever happened, happened. And universe has its own way for getting it done.
3 Idiots - Its a decent movie. DH and I dont watch all the Hindi movies that get released, its too much for us to take. Amir always likes to give a different message to the mass with his movies. With Taate Zameen Par. And with this one too. This is yet another message to parents, "Dont force your kids to do Engineering. Let them do what they like to do, and they will be masters at it and will shine (like Tendulkar in Cricket)" Its a sensitive topic. I have been a studious kid when younger, and I am sure many of us Indians can relate to the whole rat race to get into the good colleges. We forget the 70s and the 80s before all the IT revolution took place. People didnt have jobs. Most Tamil moves had unemployed heroes. Varumai Niram Sivappu stands out as I think of the movies of those times. Parents would be elated when their son found a job, however menial it may be. We have to remember our parents are from that generation. Now how many kids really know what they want to do with their life, when they finish 12th grade? Whats wrong with parents in India, mostly middle class wanting their children to chose a career that ensures steady income? In a developed country like US, it is feasible for someone to take his time to know where his passion lies and pursue it. I doubt if India is there yet. Well my point is, although it might not have been the movie's point, dont blame the parents, for wanting their children to do Engineering. They did what they thought was best, according to the resources they had at that time. Now the teachers, thats a whole different story. Although I cannot believe even IIT is about ruttifying. I agree the education system needs to change. I have had some really crappy 'PhD professors' who do not know their subject. And ofc ourse this whole hungama on competitiveness. I am someone who used to be fiercely competitive. I think it helps in some respects. It helps one to bend all barriers and stretch your limits. Healthy competition is good. But of course, without resorting to cheap tactics, missing the whole point of it all.
Avatar - After all the rants and raves on FB and elsewhere, we tried watching it multiple times unsuccessfully. Sold out. Then we made it on a weekday for the 8:30 show I believe. While initially the movie was fascinating, with a weak storyline, which has been beaten to death by millions of reviewers out there, I fell asleep towards the end during the fighting sequences. Whats with fights putting me to sleep instantly? But on the whole I am excited about 3D going to be they way we watch movies in the future. 3DTV in the CES is amazing. But really, do we have to watch TV at home with those dorky 3D glasses? Researchers have to come up with something else. So yeah, DH always makes fun of me for dozing off in crucial scenes in movies, like the climax of Chandramukhi. Now Avatar is added to the list. |

hey SK, I have never watched lost- but lately the husband has pulled me into watching Heroes.. very addictive :)!
Oo about the parents doing the best- I completely agree. This is exactly what I argue with my friends when they bring this whole Indian-parents- forcing-Engg on us argument.Very aptly put- how many Indian kids know what they want to do when they complete 12th std. I am sure glad that parents guided me into engg..all i knew was I loved Math and couldn't study biology to save my life!
Avatar- the story was definitely meh- along the lines of many masala Tamil movies- but the visuals were breath taking..
I usually go to CES every year- this year I missed it for obvious reasons!I keep hearing about the 3D TV from my colleagues all the time.

Oh god! I fell asleep during the fight sequences of avatar as well! And i thought i was the only one ;) maybe it's a cancerian thing...? :D
Lost always has me feeling just that - lost..i remember this comment conan o'brien made on his show sometime back that got me doubling over with laughter...something about how he hit his head real hard the previous nite, and for a split second he could 'actually understand the plot of lost'..but then the second he recovered, that was lost too... ;) :D
My dad is one of the my-daughters-will-do-only-engg-and-mba(finance) kinda person...i never resented it earlier cuz i didnt realy think for my own self...but then i did and trust me, i realise im soooooooo not an engineer or an mba by heart...and what's worse is it's left me, at 25, clueless as to what i wanna do next... :-/
Long comment...sorry!

Daisy, You should watch Lost, I think you will like it! Heroes, yes waiting for the latest season on DVD :--) I am glad atleast someone agrees with me :--)) Avatar, yes visuals were breathtaking, but not enough to hold the audience for 3 hrs no? CES - Ya, I heard good things about it too! :--)) Hows the baby coming along?
Preeti, Hahahha!!! :--) I am not the only one to sleep in Avatar yay! Lost - Yes I think I read that somewhere too. I think the directors have really lost track of where to take the show . Dads -- its never too late to switch careers :--) But you have to give them credit for caring enough no. Agreed they dont always do the right thing, but they do the thing that they think is right for you.

Thought provoking post as usual SK. The point is - what is the acceptable line? Wanting your children to never experience poverty is one thing, but pushing them against their will is another. I have known children who hate Mathematics being shoved to Engg after paying a hefty capitation fee etc. To what end? The child is miserable, because he just doesn't get Maths, and without Maths, Engg is a waste of time. Not only is the kid now stuck with Engg, but also with the burden of a heavy capitation fee on his head.
Expectations should be tempered to suit the talents of children. The Indian education system is terribly bad because Teaching as a profession is not a preferred choice yet. Make it lucrative, make it challenging and then we will start to see the difference.

Hi, I came here from Saumya's blog.Nice blog.
I was not too convinced with 3 idiots message. The problem with teenagers nowadays is that they don't have a clue about what they are good at. Most of them blindly answer "MBA" when asked what they want to do, without even realizing what it holds. Parental guidance is a necessary evil , almost. If your child is not good at Math, then maybe it is easier to let him/her do something other than engineering, but most of them will be average and thats where the problem lies. Since Engg has become like the BSc of Yesteryears, seems to be the way to go, though most of them don't make good engineers. An unfortunate position. And I agree with you, the college portrayed in the movie doesn't fit IIT, may be a 2nd tier college.
Agree on Avatar...too long.

Saumya, You have put in words what I tried tell, much more effectively. :--))
Shoba, Welcome here. Parental guidance is a necessary evil.. how true! I am glad somebody agrees with me on Avatar :--)
