Million dollar question
Monday, December 18, 2006
Looks like its one of those days, when the thought threads in my head tend to infinity. I wonder how the human brain, especially a woman's can think of so many many things at the same time, totally unrelated.

I will pen down a few, I am sure when I read them after a couple of weeks, I will wonder, was it really me who wrote this piece?

Million dollar question

I read in a friend's blog, about what she would do if she got her hands on a million dollars, lump sum. The sarcastic thought that popped up first was, "I would never get all of the money, govt would take close to 40% as profit tax." Seriously whats up with that? One can never be happy with the amount on the paycheck. Because invariably, close to 40% is poye pochu, poyindhe, it's gone in the name of tax. Bonus, awards, relocation money, referral bonus, stock profits, nothing is spared, leave alone regular salary. Everything is taxed at the exorbitant percentage. Jeez.

Ok with that, I start my dreamy, definitely selfish, partially impossible to achieve wishlist of what I would do if I had a million dollars, after all the tax deductions.

* A penthouse in India. Yaaay! No home loans to pay!! I specifically say India, because if I were to buy a house in the US, especially where I live, nothing much would be left from the million dollars to do much else. No way!

* Exotic furntiture for the house. I will ensure the bathrooms are big. Seriously whats with the tiny bathrooms in houses in India? Interior decoration to my heart's will.

* Travel! I mentally made a short list of places to visit as I was thinking about ways to spend the million dollars. I would visit not neccessarily in order,

- South America
- Costa Rica
- Africa
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Tahiti
- Europe (yes, again. I am sure to fall in love with it all over again)
- Israel, Greece, Egypt (Package tour probably)
- Russia (just for the heck of it)

* a Beamer and a fancy two door sports car

* Books - I would buy loads of books, turn one of the rooms into a library, all wooden panelled and all, like in fiction books, and stack them up wall to wall. May be I dont read books much, but I love to own them, I would like them to be available when I feel like reading.

* All the miscellaneous electronics stuff

- another iPod, whichever is the fad of the time
- MacBook Pro - al exorbitantly priced Apple accessories and software and upgrades
- GPS - the most expensive one around, instead trying to look for one which is 'value for money'.
- 50 inch HDTV
- fancy cell phone
- Bose Home theater
- XBOX 360( even though I dont play video games, just for the heck of it)
Updated:- Throw in an expensive camera and a camcorder too :--D

(Finally, to the serious sensible stuff)

* Provide for bro's education

* Furnished house for Mom and Dad, buy them a fancy car.

* If there is anything left :--D , 50% to charity, 50% for future of family :--D

Thats right. No fancy jewellery, or dresses. No savings or investment also.

PS: If at all I am giving you the impression of being too materialistic, pliss to note this is just a passing phase. I will be back to normalcy soon enough :--D

I asked DH the same question.
Here are his answers, hope DH wouldnt mind, :--S

- 30% to charity - Romba over, karna lineagenu ninappu than :--P
- 30% for vacations and tours - Ok, one thing we think alike
- 30% savings TO buy a pent house - why 'save' when we can actually buy one now :--P
- 10% to be spent mindlessly apparently, not sure what that means, on each other. - Ok similar thoughts. :--))

So how would you spend your million dollars? Do put them up in your blogs, if its too long to be posted as a comment here. :--)
Do go wild, wish for the skies, and also be realistic at the same time. :--D

Ok I dont have much time to write about my other thoughts. Later.
