Weekend's gone poof!
Monday, December 04, 2006
I keep saying that the days are flying by at top speed as such, but this weekend seems to have passed by in jet speed. Thanks to DH moving again from one corner in Bay Area to another, Saturday went by vacating the old place and moving into the new place. DH is going to be a proper Bay Area resident, travelling by BART(Bay Area Rapid Transit) to work, commuting half an hour one way, most of it, under water. The concept of immersed tunnel is still new to me. I am still amazed how mankind can even succeed in doing that. I did some googling on tunnels underwater, apparently, BART system, has an immersed tunnel wherein the tunnel was made separately and then immersed into water to use it. This is different from actually burrowing the tunnel beneath the land. We know of the famous Channel Tunnel built across the English Channel from France to England, which is made by actually digging the tunnel under-sea. I cant imagine even thinking of digging the land underneath the sea to make a tunnel so people can travel. Both immersed tunnel and channel tunnel must be a lot of effort, how did they keep the water from getting into the tunnel? Or did they just vaccuum it out? Do more googling to find out!

It reminded me of our time in Europe.
*Flashback start*
We crossed the English Channel on the Ferry though. (I know, totally unrelated, still my blogs are always a series of unrelated events.) It took longer than the EuroTunnel but still it was a nice experience. We got Rice and Curry for Lunch in the Ferry, a sign that finally we were reaching a country were Indian population was significantly higher. The whole bus went into the lower deck of the Ferry, the Ferry had some 5 levels, of which 3 were for the vehicles, and we got down the bus and went to the upper decks, were passengers can lounge around, eat, sleep, while crossing the Channel. Me and DH went to the outside deck, to experience fresh air, and take a look outside, it was a cold morning with water all around us. One interesting thing worth mentioning is, our Australian driver he landed the bus into the ferry from France, where driving is right-hand driving, like in the US, and when he took the bus in England, he shifted to left hand driving, like in India! The bus was the same though.
*Flashback End*

Sunday we had to go shopping. Our usual afternoon siesta coupled with movie was hindered because of that. Yes, I couldnt postpone it any longer. I had to get a semi formal party dress, for an event this week. DH had to drag me to shop. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, a brand new, not to mention unique, woman, who has to be dragged to go shopping, for herself that too!
I tried on some really fashionable albeit revealing dresses, which DH disapproved of instantly, and finally settled on a not so normal attire, a pair of palazzo pants, and sparkling top. I still need more courage to wear the real dresses. Finished shopping in an hour, came back home and settled into our regular routine of movie watching. Ah, I realize weekends are never complete without a movie or two watched cuddled up in the couch.

We called up DH's parents, it was usual talk. Just like there is a saying that goes, 'Manaivi amaivadhellam iraivan kodutha varam' I would also say, 'MIL (Mother-in-law) amaivadhum iraivan kodutha varam' :--) I have a sweet MIL, DH says I am lot like her, deep underneath, very caring, and loving, and all the mushy stuff. I havent had a chance to stay with her a lot, but still the emails we exchange thrice a week, are full of affection, like she would to a daughter she never had.

When I was younger I was rebellious. I just could not take in the fact the women have to grow up to serve the husband and family. I was always worried that I would not be a good home maker, because I hate cooking and cleaning and all the usual house hold chores that Moms or Wifes do. I always dreaded that. Even after marriage I made sure house chores were split 50-50 between us. So I dont feel oppressed, (wow, now thats a strong word, DH and oppressing? I make myself laugh :--)) Turns out I was totally wrong. I am slowly realizing, that I like to take care of people, and home, cook and clean up. Of course it is so much more easier than office work, it provides a decent diversion from work. I just need little help, attention from DH at all times. When DH's brother was here and I was cooking, I called DH to the kitchen once in 5 mins, asking this and that, and DH was only all the more accomodating. My Mom was surprised on hearing that I took care of, and cooked for four people at home. Why would she not be surprised, I have never bothered to help her in the kitchen when I was at home, not even with cutting vegetables. My help in the kitchen stopped with switching off the cooking after 3 whistles, which also I often miscounted and messed up. Anyways. These thoughts were processed in my head while wondering about the MIL-DIL relationship which is a thin red line.

Have a wonderful week folks. I am all geared up to work. Its a short week again. Friday is off! *Evil grin*
