| Weekend Twist |
| Monday, September 22, 2008 |
I am sure fate/God was falling off the chair laughing seeing me jumping up and down over the weekend, knowing what it/he had planned for me.
Clinging on to the warm and long days with much tenacity, we set out to play Tennis when the sun had almost gone below the horizon. We put on the court lights, with the timer and started playing. It sure is difficult to play without much light, it is difficult to judge the ball. Still we managed a few good rallies. Bummer was when the timer timed out in 30 minutes, and the lights went off, and they never came back on, no matter what we tried. We had just started sweating, getting into the groove. Tch tch! Only consolation was, we had a good start to the weekend, we had two whole days of the weekend still, to play more tennis. Alas, as they say, man proposes, God disposes. A pat on the back to both of us for not watching TV Friday night.
Saturday morning was spent kuppai porukkifying, literally, and no, I am not kidding. As part of my resolution, I signed up at work, for the River Clean Up. And I had to drag DH too, because it was on a Saturday, and I would have dragged In Laws too had I known what it actually involved. Two of us bleary eyed, drove to the River, at 8AM on Saturday morning, after giving one of the cars for servicing. We got a Tshirt each, two Trash bags each, water and some bars and were shooed off towards the trails along the river to collect trash, that is anything that is not nature's product along the coast of the river.
Ah! This was not so bad. We got to do our hike along the river and pick up any trash we saw on our way. We could have brought our In Laws along too, it struck us only later.
Down we went, along the trail, picked up a big stick on the way, collecting cigarette butts, beer bottles, bits of paper, wrappers of nutri bars, covers of cups, even fishing nets, fishing rods, baits. We even found a whole cycle wheel, which was our priced trash (!!) of the day. We finished one trail and got back to our car for some refreshment before heading on to another trail. But it so happened, this trail was already cleaned up by many others, and so we didnt find much trash, and ended up walking and talking most of the trail. Best part was when one of the walkers on the trail, thanked us, for helping in cleaning the area.
It was 11AM, when we picked up our car, and dropped the other car for service, and left home. Two cars serviced in one day, that is not something that happens often with us.
After a delicious lunch made by MIL, I was hell bent on planning the rest of the day. DH was in pain with Tennis and the morning hike, and wanted to nap, and there I was planning to go swimming or play another game of Tennis in the afternoon, so we can do something else in the evening. Again, God must have had a hearty laugh.
Around 3PM, me and DH took FIL along to play Tennis, armed with caps and sunglasses to beat the afternoon heat. FIL was very good, for a first timer, and all of 57 years. Again, like father, like son. Me on the other hand, has to slog and struggle to learn the tactics that comes so naturally to others. Me and DH took turns playing single, with the other teaming up with FIL. It sure takes way less effort to play doubles.
Thirty minutes into the game, I was all geared up to give my best, burn some good calories, exercise those muscles, running all over the court taking all balls, back hands, etc.
And then it happened.
There was this back hand shot which I was trying to hit, and I jumped a bit to give my shot some force, I did hit the ball, but landed in a wrong position on my left foot, my foot was turned as I landed. I stood there, stunned as the pain shot through all of my feet and leg. "DH, I think I hurt my foot" I said weakly before sitting down, throwing my racquet. I experienced for the first time, may be, what they call 'blinding pain'. Literally, my eyes clouded and I saw all black where I should have seen DH and FIL and the tennis court. Coupled with the heat, which was getting to me inspite of my cap, it was a dizzy few minutes, as DH took off my socks and massaged my foot.
Not wanting to be a whiny girl, that too in front of FIL, I suggested they continue playing while I rested by the court side. I like being pampered by DH, but I definitely dont like anyone to think of me as a delicate girl, who cant play a game of Tennis without getting hurt and making a big deal about it.
I sat there waited for the pain to subside a little, and my head to come out of dizziness, drank some water, and watched them play. I soo wanted to play. Especially because DH had said only the day before that I was getting better at the game.
I thought my leg felt better, while in reality, it was not getting worse as yet, I went in to play a few more rallies for another thirty minutes or so, limping a little, not running as much as I would have liked.
Long story short, now that all the drama has been explained in full detail, I spent a limping weekend, limped to Cold Stone for icecream in the evening, limped in the Grocery Store, limped to the Church, limped to friend's place for a delicious lunch, limped all around the house like an invalid, limped while abandoning our tennis plans for Sunday.
As I sit here, with my leg propped up in a less uncomfortable and less painful position, I am in a tiny way happy about my twisted ankle. I know those who play regularly, its not a big deal at all to twist your ankle. DH said, an ankle twist is an 'athletic wound', most players have had it, and that I was playing a good game when I twisted it. So Yayy! for me! But I do pray hope it gets healed soon, I hate walking like this and I hate to see my foot bulging out of my sandals. |

And it is fashionable to explain to your friends how you hurt yourself when you went for that forehand crosscourt. Wait! You did show off on your blog;).
