Time's up

Time seems to have flown by. Its already time for me to get back to work. I was hoping to squeeze in one more week with the long weekend, but that didnt happen.

So what has been happening with BSK?

- BSK has been outdoors a few times. She accompanied me in our evening walks for sometime. She will just fall asleep in the stroller, the constant motion serving as a lullaby.
- BSK went with us to pick up her own Birth Certificate! I was a little concerned driving with her on the freeway and walking in Downtown Oakland but it was fine.
- BSK has started smiling, its a treat to see her toothless sometimes gurgling smile in the wee hours of morning and often difficult to catch it on camera or camcorder.
- BSK has been having several visitors, last weekend was a pretty busy one. BSK met her first friend, A's dotter, who is three months senior to her. I cannot wait for them to grow up to be pals just like their mommys.
- BSK gets pumped milk in the bottle and she pulls the bottle towards her mouth with a vengeance after we burp her. She holds her hands around the bottle as if she is the one holding the bottle and feeding herself.
- BSK is exploring her vocal cords and she seems to hit all octaves and all pitches from downright basal when growling like a lion when drinking milk, to squeaking like an oil-needing door in her active sleep.
- Her eyes light up and mouth pouts during her active time, when she is very receptive to what we say or do.
- She has become so strong she can push upwards by pushing her legs on the floor or on our hands.
- I love the way she holds on to whoever is carrying her on the shoulders, watching over the shoulder. I love the way she can sleep anywhere and everywhere and in under a minute. One minute she is kicking and punching and the next minute her eyes close.
- She has started moving around so much at night, we might have to move her into the crib already. Currently she is sleeping in a cosleeper bassinet.
- Its very difficult to know why some things were/are done in India to newborns/babies since folks have just been following it blindfolded. I refuse to do something without knowing the real reason behind it, because I am afraid some things may not apply anymore.
- BSK has also been having some dry skin/ heat rash issues, broke my heart to see the putham pudhu baby fall prey to mundane worldly issues :--P

What has been happening with us?

- Turned 31 yesterday. Spending birthday with parents a full 10 years later. So special in more ways than one. Had a surprise cake and Mom made her special kesari vadai.
- We are slightly sleep deprived. Recently DH and I realized we dont know what color brush each of us use. Its habitual for both of us to pick the brush on one side, me on the left and DH on the right. All was well until the cleaning lady when cleaning either switched the brushes or turned the brush holder the other way. I took my brush and somehow the flourescent green didnt feel like mine. I touched the other brush, it was wet which meant DH had used the other one. So I brushed looking at the mirror trying to recollect how the brush felt everyday and if it was different.
The next day after talking to DH we came to a conclusion that we had swapped brushes. We took out new brushes. We did decide on which color is whose, but I am pretty sure we will forget it and just stick to left is mine and right is his. Hope the cleaning lady doesnt mess with our minds again.
- So far I am ok going to work tomorrow, my only concerns are her feedings and my pumping. Will I miss her? Of course. But a lot? I will know tomorrow.
- Cannot wait for her to grow up! Mom and I went out for an hour to Carters to get more cutsie clothes for BSK. I cannot wait to put them on her. Sigh! I wish I could wear such cute clothes. Currently none of my clothes fit me. I started walking but had to stop since I was not completely ready.. My postpartum visit is tomorrow, and then hopefully I will get the green light to work out full fledged.

The 2 months have just flown by, back to mundane routine.

Holy cr*p! You get only 2 months of maternity leave??? That's brutal! Seems like you just had the baby! Hope you are able to adjust to the new work and home routine soon! Good luck :-).

I totally LOL-ed at "BSK has also been having some dry skin/ heat rash issues, broke my heart to see the putham pudhu baby fall prey to mundane worldly issues :--P"

    You are too funny :-D!

I just love those early months with a baby, enjoy them as much as you can because being responsible as a parent kicks it sooner than we think....sorry you have to go back to work - take care!

    Hai,

Been following your blog for sometime. First time commenting. First of all Congratulations. I have a 7 month old and I live in CA as well. I was able to take 18 weeks off postpartum and then eventually decided to quit (we had to manage by ourselves. Nobody came from India to help us out).

Dont you get 6 weeks disability+ 6 weeks Paid family leave. After this there is about 6 weeks unpaid, job protected CFRA? Here is some info abt all this http://www.whosthebossblog.com/my_weblog/2010/09/understanding-maternity-leave-in-california.html.

Anyway I am sure you did all your research on maternity leave.

My baby had a very severe case of rash/dry skin + cradle cap. Mustela brand of products and cetaphil helped and we kept applying olive oil/coconut oil over his rash and that seems to help as well. Anyway you need to try a few different things before finding out what would help ur baby. Good luck

Oh...my lil one has rashes too, and I feel terrible. Babies are entitled to butter skin and though the books say the rashes don't bother them how can they be sure?!

Sorry you have to head to work so soon.............

    Anon, Arch, Anon2, NewMom, Saumya,
It was my decision to go back to work as soon as I felt better because I wanted to integrate the baby into my normal life, as normal as it can be with her, as soon as possible. I have too much inertia. :--(
1 year! 2 months felt long without working! I am aware I can take many more weeks of bonding leave but I wanted things to get back to normal soon.

    NewMom, Saumya,
Bah! Seriously, rashes suck. Although Vaseline seemed to have done the trick for BSK. :--)

Anamika here! Love your posts as I have told before.
LOL on the tooth brush switch - has happened with us too at home! Like your frankness about wondering whether you will miss the baby a lot or just right! Our love for the baby grows over time and interaction I believe. I was fine going back to work early. Keep the posts coming.
