Note: I am a total amateur when it comes to movies, so anything I have said here is solely my own opinion. I am not expecting everyone to agree with me. :--) And if you find any incorrect information please go find DH and beat him up. :--)
Yesterday we were listening to 'Maya maya' song from Baba. DH said that he really liked that song, and that he had heard it on Repeat mode multiple times. I liked the music, and the way the words blended with the music. I think it is ARR's music. DH asked me to listen to the lyrics, as, the song was full of 'karuthus' just like any other Rajini song. The song goes to say how we should not be too attached to worldly things. We need to be like a drop of oil in the sea. Even if you were the only one in this whole world, you need to stick to your properties, or ideologies. I liked it very much. Movies are the last place I would go for 'motivation' or ' advice' but still. We went on to talk about Rajini movies and Kamal movies and how Rajini movies always let you leave the theatre with a nice feeling within you. Kamal movies are realistic, practical and different, classic, and sometimes sad, leaves you with a heavy heart. There was a time, when I was younger, I used to like Kamal movies more than Rajini movies. Rajini had no talent, whereas Kamal is a versatile actor. I used to loathe anyone who liked the Super Star.
But lately, my opinion seems to have changed on this. We go to watch a movie for entertainment. It is better if we get something out of it. If we go to the theatre for time pass, and it leaves you with tears in your eyes, I dont see the point. Rajini's movies even though they are far fetched, with the hero gifted with all kinds of talent, it leaves you with a good feeling.
Truth always triumphs, good always wins, good thing happen to good people, these are the kind of so called lessons from Rajini's movies. I do accept that almost all of his movies have the same story, in fact so much similar that I sometimes get confused between them. But I think I have found the secret in Rajini movies' successes.
I did make fun of him, and loathed him for acting after he has become so old. I looked him up on Wikipedia, and he is older than my Dad! It urns out that more than him wanting to act, the audience wants to see him, no matter how old he is. He is apparently a good man in real life. All this info about Rajini Kanth, courtesy DH. :--) As DH went on to tell about him, and as we continued talking about him, and as I listened to 'Maya maya' song on over and over, really enjoying the tune of the words 'otti ottamaliru', may be I am in an intensely pensive, thoughtful state, I really liked him.
DH said Baba was a super flop. I am not a big fan of Rajini, I havent seen many of his latest movies, and I get confused between the different movies he has done, they are soo similar. On a whim, inspite of having watched the movie ABCD, with tears in my eyes, the previous day, we went to the Indian store to get this movie. Alas, the movie was out, but after talking so much about Rajini, I had to see one of his movies, so we took Padaiappa. Now, this movie, I remember, because of Ramya Krishnan. I hate her. She had an almost equal role as Rajini in the movie, and she had done it well too, err, for her standards.
When I watch all these movies, I automatically activate the glitch filter in my head, to filter out any logic incoherence, forget laws of gravity, as I remember reading somewhere, and most obvious practicality. Basically take your brain out, or shut it off.
I like the Suthi suthi song, for Harini's voice. I also enjoy this song, because I think I was totally in love when I heard this song on Repeat over and over, just before getting married. :--) This other song is also good, 'Kick eruthe' song. Again full of thathuvams.
I like these words especially. 'Kaiyyil enna kondu vandhom kondu sella.' Its so true.
"thaayai therndhekkum thandhayai therndhekkum urimai unnidhathil illai mugaththai therndhekkum niraththai therndhekkum urimai unnidhathil illai pirappai therndhekkum irappai therndhekkum urimai unnidhathil illai eNNi paarkkum vELaiyil un vaazhkai mattum undhan kaiyil undu adhai vendridu!"
In the Baba song I liked the following lines:
Unathu kai kaalhale Udhavum nanbarkale Thiraikadal mael eNNai thuliyinai poal Nee otti ottamal iru
Not sure if its the song I like or the music. I am usually drawn by music first and lyrics next. But the lyrics blended in with the tune so well, I have been listening to these songs again and again today at the gym. Its my earworm now. :--)
Anyway, all this may sound very stupid, who knows, I might be embarrassed for writing all this tomorrow, but hey, these are what I feel right now, and I want to capture them as they are.
I am really awed by this guy. I dont care about what people think of him, or if he is a Super Star or if he is ugly or dark or old, but from all I have heard, he is a good man at heart. It seems he visits the Himalayas often because he finds peace there. He is so simple when he appears in functions, doesnt try to hide his age or anything. It just leaves good respect for him in me. Btw, I wouldnt call DH an ardent Rajini rasigan. ;--)
We worry about so many things in life, about money, clothes, status, prestige, promotion, career, etc etc, I mean finally, what, they dont go with you. I really needed this lesson. First we want one thing, then when we get that we want another thing, and then another thing. A man who is not content with what he has is never happy. All these things so dont matter in the long run.
Life is actually very simple. It gives you back in equal to what effort you put into it.
So tell me what is wrong if I prefer a logically incoherent Padayappa which finally leaves me with a feel-good factor with adundant hope, to the sad, tear inducing Mahanadhi which makes you wonder if there is any justice at all in this world?
PS: I guess I am a little jobless now :--P |

Rajini's movies are mostly totally fluffy stuff which leave you with a good feeling :-)! I liked Padayappa mainly because of Ramya Krishnan :-D! I think she completely overshadowed everyone else with her super performance!
That said, you are very lucky you did not get hold of the Baba movie. Believe me, till date, it is THE worst Tamil movie I have ever seen in my life (actually I watched only half as I could not sit through the end - but even that was enough to make me want to kill myself).
I appreciate serious movies if they are well made. But I can never enjoy them! Give me the logicless but bone-tickling, everything-is-great-with-the-world movie any day :-)! I am totally with you on that!

Regarding serious movies, you hit the nail on the head, same here. :--))
