Office pranks
Tuesday, September 26, 2006
I was reading this book The Joy of Work by Scott Adams over the weekend, on the way to the Bay Area to watch JOK. About the movie itself I will say a few words in the end, if I feel like it. The book has a whole chapter about Office Pranks. Some of them are too darn funny, but also stupid enough that it would make one look stupid if one tried to play it on others.

So I was thinking what kind of pranks we have played at work. These cant be exactly called as pranks, but do come close.
The guy beside me is always a target for pranks. Not because he is gullible or stupid, but because he is just everyone's favorite. Once he left to have a long chat with his boss, and we all raided his cube. This geeky guy I talked about earlier coded something that filled his Unix session with butterflies. And he also sent an email to his mail address warning him of 'data security breach', asking him to alway lock the system before leaving it unattended. He also ordered him to take the most boring 'security awareness' class again. The guy came and obviously had to ask me what happened to his system and I could not keep a straight face.

Recently he went to Costa Rica on a business trip for a week. I told him on IM that I smelt something reallly strange in his cube, like stale food, and asked him if he got rid of any lunch he had in the last few days. He was really sorry and apologized thoroughly, though he didnt remember leaving anything out. I did not tell him the truth until he returned! ;--) Needless to stay he was shocked and angry.

And boy! did we give him an awesome welcome back to his cube. We accumulated all our balloons and put them in his cube. Our cubes are pretty small, and tiny, so with four huge balloons in there, it looked like a mini garden, crowded with flowers. And then I decided to put all his books on the shelf upside down. And also all the different papers, cheatsheets he had pinned to the cube wall. We did some other things, like writing stuff on his white board, a warm welcome., which pretty showed we missed him.

This upside down idea is not totally new. These guys when they come to talk to me in my cube, have the habit of playing with the name plate. And somehow when they are done and leave, my name plate is upside down! This was fun initially, people laughed at, but soon became boring. One fine Monday, [since all these pranks usually happen during our Friday evening gossip sessions] I was talking to the guy opposite my cube. My eyes inadvertantly went to the spot where his name plate was, and lo! I saw something incomprehendable for a second. It was my name plate, upside down! And yes, his name plate was on my cube, also upside down.

Hm, I cant remember anything more, except the silly email pranks, mocking mail addresses and pretending to send to All Employess.

The book talked about this one prank which had me in splits. Call one person, dont talk, and conference the call with another person, preferrably on a different floor, and remain dead silent. Check how long it takes for them to figure out neither called the other! :--)) Oh and another good one was this. Send a FAX message to someone's phone. When the person picks up he would just get screeching noises as the FAX machine tries to transmit. And the best part is the machine keeps trying quite a few times before quitting. :--))

It is a funny book, but far fetched.

So about the movie, no, didnt like it. Surya had almost no role in the movie. They didnt show him as much as I would have liked, and the times he was on screen, he did not do a good job acting. I found a truck load of loop holes, it was like finding bugs. DH was so disappointed with the movie, he slept half way through. We didnt want the whole Saturday to disappear into oblivion without having done anything useful or fun. So we stopped at Livermore Temple on the way back, atleast our trip was not a complete waste.
