Looks matters
Tuesday, March 06, 2007
PS: Ok you know I am really busy, but I have to put this in writing.

When I was very young I had a lot of inferiority complex, about my looks. It took some time for me to come to terms with it. When I thought nobody can like me, some did, and one actually married me. Nowadays, I dont really mind much. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Very true. It is the inner beauty that matters much more than external beauty. A girl might dress up fashionably and look really attractive, but be shoddy and crappy inside. Never judge a person by his/her looks.

I talked to someone today, who is DH's brother's friend who has come here to where I work. Our company is his 'client', he has come to solve some problems, apparently. I called him to generally talk. He was non stop complaining. I mean, I know girls crib, this is the first guy I heard who was cribbing 30 mins out of the 45 mins we talked. He thought our work place was too silent. He thought everyone was a workaholic. He thought cafe food sucked big time [His company's cafe food was apparently good] He thought every one was crazy to come to work at 7AM. He thought everyone put 16hrs at work. He thought our building looked like a hospital. He thought parking was horrible. [It takes 10 mins from when you park your car to get to your cube] :--))Btw all these observations were made in 8 hours.

Come to think of it. It is all very true. I dont deny it. :--) But these are the very reasons I am proud to be here. :--)

I know all software companies have fancy offices to lure and attract customers. Ok software guys [including DH] dont pounce at me. I dont have to even talk about the fancy buildings these MNCs build in India. Not all companies in the US are made of glass with large lobbies. Somehow exterior looks are given so much importance. Leave alone people, even for buildings!

Once when I was in Bangalore, I visited a friend at his work place. It was another MNC, a fancy glassy, sparkling building with huge lobbies and chick couches. He literally beamed at me and asked, "Did you see how my office is!" :--)

DH's little bro visited us for Thanksgiving last year. He saw my office and he went,"IBM in Chicago is a huge office.." All these newbies who land straight in Chicago or NewYork think all of US is like Chicago with tall buildings. :--) I landed in the Dairyland of Wisconsin, with green pastures and farmlands. That is US too, you know. One should visit Nebraska and Wyoming and Dakota to see the 'other' side of US.

Anyway, what I wanted to say is this. Exterior looks do not matter. If you have substance in you, looks does not matter. People who are attracted to others because of their external beauty are shallow. The same would hold for companies too, I think. :--D People may not look attractive from the outside but once you talk to them, you get to see their inner beauty and like them for that. The same would be the case with companies too. I can work in a fancy office and hate my job. I'd rather work in a hospital-like office and enjoy my life. Its the substance that matters, I should reiterate.
