| Best part of today was easily spending time talking to the kids in the school and teaching a very enthusiastic science teacher how to use Libre Math ( MS office on Ubuntu )
The kids were super excited to see us. One asked me if I was from Africa. I guess they expect 'white people' to come to do this kind of stuff. I wondered if I was having an identity crisis here. ;--P I wanted to help these folks and I wonder of they want to get help only from the white? Or was it in my head? They obviously liked white skin and straight hair. So anyway they wanted to know about JSK and see pictures of her and DH.
The science teacher wanted us to visit classes 4 through 8 and talk to them about career, encourage them, anything. It was a great experience. I was not hesitant to talk to them and I felt I really had stuff to tell them like genuinely from the heart. Wanted them to work hard, be curious, never stop learning.
We met a parent who had taken the initiative to raise funds for the computer room. I am sure it was not easy to raise funds considering their incomes. They did in hopes of educating their children so they can all do well in life. The kids were pretty smart. They knew a lot of things. I wanted to tell them they can make it if they worked hard. I have been there, I was in their shoes. They were soo cute. It didn't occur to me to take any pictures today. I was just cherishing the moments. The kids walk/run 6kms to school one way. They all had good ambitions to become doctors and surgeons and lawyers. The girls too which was very heart warming.
The science teacher wanted to teach solar system to the kids and I showed him the app he can use. He was so interested and said that 'I wish I had this many years ago I would have learnt it'. I told him we are working on getting super cheap, inexpensive systems so every single person on earth can have access to a computer. I literally saw the effort of my work in the field. It was grass itching. We may push the edge of innovation and make super awesome products but a product is really successful if it reaches the mass, everyone gets to use it not just the elite few.
I badly wanted to mentor some of the girls, keep in touch with them, sponsor them may be. Writing it down so I would do something about it. The teachers were so grateful we were doing this. The kids were excited to have us. Overall a super fulfilling day. I want to treasure the memory of this day.

Great job SK!!!We spend a major part of our day / life at work. And getting to actually see how our job impacts people in need is much needed for one's soul. All that time spent away from family (i mean, when we are working, taking calls at home ) ,seems so justified,rt?
