| I can't help but feel sorry for the people. It hurts me. Sometimes it brings tears to my eyes. - we went to a small store because our local contact recommended it and the whole village came to see us. They would just smile and stare at us. I wonder if they expect the 'white people' to give something to them whenever they visit - speed bumps on the road are called 'sleeping policemen' ( they keep your speed in check, get it?). So this shop owner put speed bump before and after his shop so folks are forced to stop and hence more likely to see his shop. Smart eh? And apparently anybody can put speed bumps on the road they are mid roads after all. - the teachers were very shy. Some of them. Others knew computers. Some were smart and fast, others were touching a mouse for the first time. The kids would come in and watch us working on the machines. We put them an animation movie during lunch. They enjoyed it. We have away USB keys and everyone wanted one. - Again I didn't feel like taking pictures of the people. Because hey they are not sights to see. Even though all the kids were eager to be in pictures ready to smile. They were western clothes but very old and sometimes torn and dirty. Someone said the clothes that are left over at places like Goodwill get shipped here. But the teachers sometimes were coats and formal clothes, also a little dirty. But they try to be presentable. It just hurts me, for some reason. - not sure if I mentioned but this is 'the home of the champions' marathon winners are from here. Lots of runners come here to train. The altitude and the hills help them to train I guess. We saw many runners running on the roads. The hotel we stay in has a group of runners from France training here. They run 15-20 miles a day and eat a truckload. - Christian missionaries galore. In fact the school is tied to a home for the orphans sponsored by missionaries who sing songs and put plays. The kids can't differentiate and they expected us to put some plays and sing too! Nope sorry not here to sing, only teach computers. - poverty in this country is overwhelming. They kill rhinos and sell the horn for millions of Kenyan shillings. But poaching is a crime and you can be killed for it. Safaris are super expensive like disneyland or six flags in US. We might go on a short one this weekend. I will get my camera out for that. - the program we are helping with is very noble. The mobile carrier is setting up computer lab in 1 school per county in Kenya. A program called 47in1. I learnt that many parts of Kenya is extremely unsafe. Even Kenyans are afraid to go to northern parts of Kenya. But they are making progress. One school at a time. - we are jelling well as a group. Lot of fun, learning about each other. I am not too impressed with our VP. A story for another time. My Jetlag is horrible, only 4 hours sleep at night. Cannot wait for it to be over! Our lunch is very basic sandwich. We don't eat anything all day except that and breakfast in hotel an dinner in hotel. Not too fond of the food. Meh. But loving the experience. Just the kids, the teachers, the parents, the people, very very heart warming. |
