Holiday time
Monday, December 19, 2011

Holidays holidays, did I tell you I love this time of the year? They should have a work shutdown all of December.  Last week we went to the winter Party at work. The one black  dress I own is probably too small for me right now, I couldnt even find it in my closet, its probably tucked away in the garage with more of my summer clothes, I have to find it some day.  I took this as an opportunity to get another dress. Not sure if it is a good one or bad. Being in the middle of a weight loss program and in between sizes is the most painful time to be shopping. But a girl has to wear something right? Plus a new mom has to take the extra step to feel good in her new role, under her new skin.

The party was Saturday evening and somehow we ended up at the Rack only Saturday afternoon. Some planning. There is something about these dresses that make you look better. Generally at work parties, atleast the ones I have been to, we are given explicit instructions on what to wear - formal, casual etc. Guys are given explicit instructions to not come in jeans and sneakers. In geeky places such instructions are a must. This party didnt come with any. But anyway I decided to go in a dress and forced DH to wear his suit. Thank god. Everyone was dressed formally.  The problem is it is winter and it is cold and formal clothes on women always show some skin. Jackets can only work so much. And pants bore you in a party. So ya, we had to park on the other side of the road and walk quite a bit to get to the place and I was cold and shivering. I was relieved to see many other women in my state as I entered the hall. :--P We got virgin Margaritas and I must say it was quite awesome. Food was abyssmal as was expected of such places. Dessert was okay. Tahitian dance kept us entertained for a while before we decided to call it a day and leave. We got to take the centerpiece home after a silly game of passing the salt shaker. I missed my older team from F town. They know how to party. As we were leaving I saw a lady running bare foot across the road with her stilettos in her hands.  Some people need to get their priorities straight.

I have been shopping for footwear. For a long time this year I was wearing rapsters. With socks for winter.  Then I wanted flats for the pregnant self. One black pair lasted just a year of everyday wearing. Then it started looking a bit worn out. DH was like, " Buy some shoes/sandals/formals whatever". Ya, everyone is asking me to go buy some stuff for myself. Since I havent shopped for anything in a long time. My Mom, when I was talking to her last weekend asked me if I bought clothes :--S, even she was tired of seeing me in the same clothes. With the blessing of everyone in the family I have been shopping like there is no tomorrow. The holiday season doesnt help with the temptation. So within a span on three weeks, I have gone from owning a single pair of flats to owning six pairs to wear to work! This is excluding the other footwear I use on and off through the year whenever I remember I own them. And I cannot count the number of outfits I have purchased. I am too scared to take account lest I faint. But I do need clothes. Decent ones that I can wear everyday. But I cannot help feeling guilty. Like why should I own 6 pairs of footwear instead of 1? Can I not give them away to the poor so they can be warm in winter? How much is too much?

We were at Stanford Shopping Center again this weekend to get some dinnerware for the holiday party at our place. Now that I have made the transition to skinnes and leggings and tunics and boots, and have educated DH about them, both of us notice women and their clothing. Suffice to say 8 out of 10 women we spotted sported boots and skinnies/leggings. Normally I wouldnt have noticed them.

We had our own Holiday Party yesterday with the White Elephant gift exchange. MIL was the star cook. Did I mention she is an amazing cook? Only I dont let her cook all the yummy stuff for fear of my waistline. The menu was simple, baby being the excuse.
Pori kadalai  -puffed rice, pott kadalai, peanuts, garlic and salt, yummm!, you cannot stop eating when you want to. Simple yet lip smacking good.
Chips, crackers and dip for appetizers - Love Trader Joes stuff
Poori and potato masala - people couldnt stop eating, I finally asked MIL to stop making more so they will eat other stuff :--D
Channa masala - Simple dish. Everyone guessed may be DH made it from the looks of it. But the taste was over the top. I asked MIL just how can she make even the simplest of dishes so delicious?! Liberal oil at the right time she says. I say over thirty years of experience!
Bisibelabath/Raitha - I made, was decent. Anything that isnt a disaster is a win
Curd rice - Even curd rice was yummy! Compliments poured in.
Coriander chutney - It had that jhatka, that went in well with the curd rice. I worked the mixie, does that count?
Sakkarai pongal - Lots and lots of ghee and jaggery ensured even Saravana Bhavan pongal lost the battle.

Oh and the time it took for me to make bisibelabath equalled the time it took for MIL to make all the other stuff combined! :--S

White Elephant gift exchange was fun.Funny gifts ranged from hair color spray to candles and wax. We sorely missed S and U who have moved to India for good. BSK was awesome, yet again, inspite of having a cold and runny nose. I dont know how she decids whether she likes someone or not. She cried when two of the guests lifted her. She was perfect with the rest of them. we got offers to baby sit her when we wanted time off, which is always good.

BSK has been having a runny nose since Saturday, I suspect its because I gave her a head bath differently. I feel soo sorry for her. But she seems to be her old funny happy self. I love her voice. Sometimes she has this double voice. I love that too. She has been saying some consonants on and off nothing deliberately. DH  and MIL said she said Ma in two different times but I am yet to hear it. Apart from being on her knees like a dog and rocking, now she also lifts her knees and butt to make an inverted V. She also sat on her own from the doggy position once. Hasnt done that again. She sits comfortably but needs someone to be supervising. I left her side for a split second to get her toy and she fell backwards :--( She cried and I cried. But she seemed okay in a few seconds. Now when she plays she will come close and touch my face. Sometimes she comes close and licks my face, eyes, ears, nose too. She likes to pull at anyones hair. And pull them to her mouth. Last night in bed, she would play with the remote, and give an "aaiiii" sound, like she is coming to war and go to DH arms outstretched to pull and bite his hair. Then she would go back to playing with the remote and then she would repeat the same sequence. Soo cute! She has inherited a funny bone from DH. She laughs at herself. She loves the sound of someone sneezing or coughing. So I fake sneeze a lot to her. Since she has a cold now, and also sneezes, after she finishes sneezing she looks at me and laughs! Like she is laughing at her own joke! Little BSK please dont lose this sense of humor as you grow up! She will sit on my lap, lock her fingers and watch me as I do  faces and sounds to entertain her. She will give a gummy laught with her mouth totally wide open as far as possible. Sometimes I feel like eating her up. Is that normal?

SK: I want to say you are lucky with mom's cooking for 6 months and mil's cooking for another 6 months - but then you are also trying to shed the pregnancy weight :) .. it is bit of irony!
PS: oh and I agree 30 yrs of cooking def. needs a lot of weightage!

"Sometimes I feel like eating her up, is that normal?" - Ask fellow cannibalistic moms and the answer is a resounding 'YES!'

Eating up is totally normal - I feel like it and do it gazillion times a day!

Good job on the dishes...are you guys vegetarian?

I can show you or talk you through a safe way to give head bath. Basically, lay her tummy down in between your legs, which are spaced apart enough to keep her head open for ventilation. Then shampoo and rinse her hair - water will not get into her eyes or ears....but you do it quick and then turn her around and put her in the small bathing tub filled with warm water.

Shachi, hahaha! They get cuter and cuter dont they!
Not vegetarians, we do take chicken occasionally, but the crowd we catered to was majorly veg. :--)
I have to try bathing her on my legs, never done that.

    Nandini,
Happy new year!! Where is your post?
