Ramblings Only

Just ramblings, only a vent for emotions, feelings and all the good stuff

Week 2

A new week after all the excitement of the safari weekend. A new school. New teachers who are our students. New challenges. New kids. These kids were rambunctious. They would come at us and surround us and ask question after question and laugh and touch our hair etc. All the teachers are super new to computers. We taught them keyboard games and mouse games. We want them to use the computer to help with their lesson plans, save a lot of time from writing things over and over again.

One teacher said "I did not know how to use a mouse three days ago and now I can create a lesson plan and a lesson. You have achieved your objective." It made me wonder how I learnt these things. Like mouse and MS Word and Excel. I didn't have formal training on MS. You Just learn it, go with the flow. Same with Linux. I did learn Unix to be honest. The awe and wonder when they see things happen so quickly is priceless. Also makes me appreciate how much we take things for granted.

Bumpy roads..super bumpy. To the point of giving me a neck ache. We drove 4 hours one way to Lake Victoria. This lake spans three countries, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. We saw hippos on the lake. Hippos are one of the first cause of deaths in Africa. Second comes Mosquitos, malaria.

Everyone warned us never to be on the road after the sun goes down. Bad things happen. Like muggers, like bad drivers, may be animals etc. we stopped at a souvenirs shop coming out of Lake Nakuru and we got late getting back to our hotel. We reached by 730pm which was 1hour of driving after sunset. The place changes after dark. No street lights. Winding single lane roads on the valley face. People walk on the road side with no light whatsoever. Our van's brakes conked off. Only on one wheel and it made a scratching noise of metal on metal every time our driver hit the brakes. Some locals if they knew 'white people' were in the van could do anything, stop the van and take our wallets may be. Kenya is a poor country. People do everything for money. Police man sees white people in the van and he asks for money from the driver. Share with everyone it seems. Different rates for Kenyans than white people. So anyway we kinda made it safe but even our driver was scared and made sure we did not get late the next day. He has a huge responsibility on his shoulders, protecting 7 silly foreigners.

We spoke with a German and a Norwegian who are here at our hotel training for Olympics next year. They are  sponsored   by Nike. I will make sure to get an autograph from them in case they do win the Olympics. They train here with the Kenyan runners. Every morning we see runners running on the road. The altitude of the place along with being near the equator gives year around good temperature along with the altitude training for runners. This place is also fricking beautiful. We are in the start of rainy season so it rains almost everyday. Since we are on the face of the Rift Valley the clouds come in to the valley and get out making crazy beautiful picture worthy scenes.
