Transitions
Thursday, November 04, 2010
With my Audio book done (which was Getting to Yes, good book, hope I get to use what I learnt somewhere), no iPod, boring FM, I was left with my own thoughts on the drive back home. Thoughts wandered to transitions and changes and breaks and life changing events in the past decade or so.

12th to College - 12th exams got over in April. But alas, nothing was confirmed on the college front so the transition was not exactly a peaceful one. April to August I had some fun but mostly ended up preparing for writing Entrance Exams after Entrance Exams. All the results were very delayed and hence it was very late by the time I knew where I would be going. One month went in IIPE classes trying to master all of the State syllabus for the TNPCEE exam. Then the rest of the time went in prepping for the other elite exams. Come to think of it I seem to have always done this. Appear for way too many positions, I like to have my options, have back up plans B, C and D.

College to Grad School - Now this was the best period I can safely say.Final year was a breeze with a job in hand. University admits and funding news were in by March. And once college got over in May, I was all set to come to the US. May to August I had the best time of my life. Days would go by with gym in the morning, and TV/reading rest of the day, interspersed with chatting with friends. DH, then best friend visited a couple of times, and mostly we wrote emails rather frequently to each other. It was only then I came to know of the big brand shops like Shoppers Stop, Woodlands etc, otherwise why would we middle class folks shop there? I didnt know squat about US or the school system or anything for that matter, I didnt know anyone in the US, save the two girls I was going to be roomies with. I just packed my bags and landed here, dreaming to have a life that I actually have right now, touchwood. But the irony is, you grow up and your priorities change and you want different things.

Grad School to First Job - Now, I didnt get any break in between. I was doing my Summer RA and the day H1B came through they asked me to join right away. No break. But since I knew I got the job earlier on, I did my very first leisure trips one to CA with friends and one road trip in TX.

First job to Second job - I had just got married. It was like DH brought good things to my life. ;--)I had one week in between jobs when DH and I did our coast to coast road trip to CA. I still distinctly remember driving into CA on 80W among the Sierra mountains enjoying the beauty around and shouting joyfully. Coming from Midwest, CA was exotic.

After five happy long years, which were filled with transitions for DH, moving from one job to another trying live as together as possible, another transition for me that I just went through. Not as big as the ones above, but transition nevertheless.

Come to think of it, each transition was paving way to something better, better education, better career, ultimately better life. The hectic time before and during the transition is amazing. The fact of accomplishing something, getting to a better place, comes a heady rush. I loved it. Thinking back, I want such moments. I want to continue having such moments. These are what make life worth living.

So here's to more such transitions in all our lives.

Happy Deepavali. :--)
