This past weekend we had a gettogether in the name of HouseWarming Party. It was exclusively only for AID folks, a lot of work, but super fun. DH and I kept postponing it for so long, something of the other coming on the weekend, last month we picked a day 1 month in the future and decided we will stick to it. Sept 11th it happened. I knew it was an important day for Americans. But didnt know it was so important in so many other ways. Eid, Ganesh Chathurthi, Jewish Festival (!), Jain Festival. We put a full five hour event, knowing very well folks would not turn up on time. IST, duh! Sure enough, we were ready by 5PM, and the first person dropped in at 5:45PM. :--) And then slowly people started trickling in. Everyone brought plants, and flowers. I didnt know that that is the most given house warming gift. :--) So I have so many cute flowering plants and pots now, I ame excited! We also got a bouganvilla plant! Yippee! We did Karaoke for some time, it as super fun, people sang old Hindi and Tamil songs, all in chorus, sitting around. Soon the house was full. We got the food out and eating began. DH was the entertainer as usual. I didnt even notice what was happening, as I was setting the table ready. Something about how DH and I met. No paper plates, cups or spoons. Its quite difficult when you have 25-30 people in the house, but managed it somehow. Following dinner, there was a Publicity meeting that took place downstairs while our little group had our own meeting upstairs. It was 11 by the time people started leaving. The house was buzzling with people, I totally loved it. A small group of close friends stayed until 1AM, singing and playing instruments. My brother played the guitar while another friend played the Keyboard and we sang some old songs like Pehla Nasha, Mera jootha hai Japani, Papa kehthe hain. I didnt know bro played such awesome Guitar. He learnt it only after he came to the US, that too on his own.
And this is just housewarming 1 I think we will have atleast 2 more such.
Back bending work all of Sunday taking breaks only to cook/eat/go to Church, writing hand made invitations with volunteers at home. Felt like SUPW all over again. :--)
A friend forwarded this beautiful poem sharing it here -
"The hands that serve are holier than the lips that pray."
Service speaks softly quietly carefully Unknown hands deliver great deeds with little or no greed The sound of service seeks not to claim name fame or even shame True service rises above good bad happy sad It can be said that in service there is no success For the process is, was - and will be - endless And therein lies its greatness A heart of service can never fail For to truly serve another is to become like a mother: selfless content and strong Giving fully and completely The secret of service’s nobility lies in its connection with divinity The hands that serve are full even as they become empty For to serve is to love To love is to give To give with love is to forgive the faults in others To clear the eyes so that we may truly and deeply see All that we may Be When we become as One and are Free
