Routine and not so routine
Sunday, February 27, 2011
Dinner done, lunch packed for tomorrow, DH working the dish washer, Oscar in the background, waiting to have ice cream for dessert, as yet another week goes by giving way to another.

I have a love-hate relationship with routine. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I loathe it. Routine is sort of being organized. But routine is also mundane and boring. So I strive to be organized but fight boredom.

Life is more organized, or is it boring, since we moved in together, I attribute it more to DH than myself. Everyday evening I try to cook which still amazes me given how much I used to OB adichufy earlier. Taking lunch to work everyday, haven't eaten in the Cafe for a while now. Cooking is all about practice and experience. But there are days or weeks when I just get frustrated with routine and yearn for eating out everyday. Thankfully DH obliges.

Not so long ago, I used to get so flustered when people come home to eat my food. Will they like it? Will they be able to eat well? And watch how much they eat, and feel bad if they dont eat well. Now I have graduated. And simply by practice and experience. J came to discuss something on a week day. Week day evenings are routine and packed. And I have to eat on time so I can sleep peacefully and all night. Once the clock struck 8, DH and I set out to do our usual chores while J was still chatting with us. She was an unplanned dinner guest and I didnt get flustered. Kudos to me! Left over sambhar and adai batter saved the day. I made a quick coconut chutney and with idli podi from India, dinner was done! J did eat to her heart's content, settling for 2 adais and then asking for half adais twice over. We also managed to do the usual chores while J stayed late until past 10 and I was literally falling asleep yawning my way to glory.

Yet another World Cup watching get together at home last night. This time the guys decided to be quiet, watch the match lights off. I woke up at around 5 and went down to see figures huddled up in blankets half asleep on couch and floor, watching the match. It was a good game, and I am sure DH enjoyed the company to discuss, predict, and hi-fi at wickets. I made Poha Upma at the last minute feeling guilty for not providing the guys with Indian breakfast, yet another impromptu unplanned one, which was well received.

Speaking more of routine, if buying a house is a step up in responsibility, having a baby is another two steps. For the first time ever we took account of our finances last year around this time when we started hunting for homes. And I should say we have come a long way in one year. We started off by just keeping track, not trying to cut down anything. And with mint.com, its much easier to keep track of the expenses and have budgets. Every month we get over our budget with some excuse or the other, but atleast we know now where our expenses are headed, what are the fixed costs, what are variable etc. Its a big step for us. When I started earning, my father used to tell me to be conscious of spending, in fact even after we got married, we never really took charge of our finances. This was mostly because both of us were earning and independent I guess. But having a dependent in the family really changes things around. Its a huge responsibility, a bit scary too. So growing up we have to do. I have started reading some personal finance blogs, while some provide good insights, others are outright ridiculous. For example, this post got me wondering, really do we have to save money like this? Where do you draw the line? DH and I sure are glad in a way we got to roam around carefree at least for while before settling down. I seem to like doing finances in contrast to paying bills which I absolutely loathe. One more item to plan, keep milestones and celebrate success.

Not so routine, snow in Bay Area! Well at least thats what was predicted. I became greedy and hoped for a day off from work. But nothing happened. Thursday morning was bright and clear. Thursday evening we had to go to Berkeley for a class and we were wondering if we should cancel it because of the prediction. Thank god we didnt. It was just drizzling all night long and that was it. Friday dawned, again cloudy and cold, but nothing much more. The surrounding mountains looked all the more beautiful if at all, green and nestled amongst the dark clouds. No rain Friday evening but it was colder than usual. By Saturday everything was over, darn! I was really hoping for some interesting action, I was given none.
